Jun. 13th, 2006 05:15 pmReading about the Religious Right's opposition to the new HPV vaccine is just really off-putting. (The vaccine is a nearly 100% effective preventative for the virus which is the most commom cause of cervical cancer)
Here is a wonderful vaccine which will save thousands of lives, and they are opposed to it because they think it will make girls more promiscuous? HPV, they say, isn't a problem if you just stick to abstaining from sex outside of marriage. I can almost imagine these people standing over the sickbed of a woman dying from cancer, and saying, "well, that is what you deserve." It is the same with these laws which allow pharmacists to refuse to fill a person's prescription. Saying, "I am judging you according to my beliefs, and because you do not adhere to them you will now face the consequences."
*sighs*
The world isn't this safe, sterile place where people who follow the rules won't get hurt...and it just makes me sad that groups are acting like it's so, and having no compassion for those who are hurting and in need of it.
*edit* One thing that brightened up my day considerably, though...got to move around some really old books at the library today! Of course, they turned out to be mostly etiquette and housekeeping books, but such old copies really are wonderful. I believe one that I looked at briefly was from 1797, if I did not mix up my roman numerals. It is too bad that many of them were falling apart, or missing covers though. Some of them had very intricately worked designs in the cover....one had an engraved image of a Greek woman, stamped in gold.
Ah, I will end my gushing over the books now. *smiles*
