May. 6th, 2006 11:04 amSo just saw a little blurb about leetspeak on CNN...and of course, I think they've got it all wrong. X(
So first they say that leetspeak is more than just "lol", which of course is true...but then they go on to say that such things as "pos"---"parent over shoulder", and "mirl"---"meet in real life" are leetspeak.
Wrong!
Leetspeak just doesn't do that...it's really not concerned with acronyms or things like that. Leetspeak is all vocabulary and letter style....and what bugs me most is that the segment was basically saying that kids are using leetspeak to talk around their parents who may be checking on their chat logs and such. Argh. Why does it feel like everything in this country is antagonistic toward geekery and the gaming culture? People are up-in-arms about "violent video games", Dungeons and Dragons is still something you don't mention within five miles of a church....and there's still, I'm sure, a stereotype that gamers are all thirty-something guys who can't get a date and are still living in their parents' basement.
Well, I doubt there'll be any changes in sentiment unless stuff like this becomes utterly mainstream. *sigh*
*end rant*
