Okay. So in the four days since the Lenny debacle we've been pretty busy. But it seemed like the higher-ups have been holding things together for the most part (at the very least, there's been no open warfare in the streets). All the easy stuff had been falling down to us, but it was obvious from the moment we walked into Warehouse 17 that this one would be different. The man who took us out on our first mission, Lieutenant Rider, was there waiting for us. I had heard he had been transferred to District 10, but it was still good to see him alive and well after the shape he was in when we parted ways.
Rider briefed us on the mission...looks like we were somehow able to get peace talks going, and the services of a particular negotiator would be required. We were to pick up one "Tony Maximus" at the Gorgon's Eye and take him to an as-yet undisclosed location. Rider warned us not to underestimate him..which, I'm sure, set off alarm bells in most of our heads. In this business, to underestimate anything can be a fatal mistake, so to be out-and-out warned about it..well, just another hint that tonight was going to be interesting.
We rolled out; we had been provided with extra transportation and protection in the way of a limousine and a decked-out Humvee. So even though this procession of vehicles must have made a very odd sight, we arrived at the Gorgon's Eye without incident.
I waited outside with the vehicles while a few of the others went in to find Maximus. Carter wanted to go in with them, but had some sort of reaction to all the "creature of the night" mojo, I think. They had been gone for awhile, when all of a sudden the cars started up on their own and started driving off. Darren was in one, and Sam as well, though he managed to get out after the limo crashed into the opposite building. There was general confusion as we were trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Seth ran into the club as did CT, and a few minutes later Seth and that damned Irish vamp came flying back out the door. After a brief altercation, he and his buddy (who was undoubtedly responsible for the cars taking off) ran off. I found myself fervently wishing we had some way to neutralize their crazy abilities...not much we can do to stop them when they can invisibly cause our vehicles to go zooming up the interstate, is there? Don't we have an R&D division? Maybe they could, perhaps, do their jobs and whip up something that will keep us alive when our enemies invoke their superhuman, uncombatable reality-bending abilities.
But I digress.
We hadn't seen Darren since things had gotten hairy, and Sam told us he had gotten into a car accident (understandable). I wanted to go look for him since he was injured, but Seth made me go back inside after we heard Draco Company sirens approaching. So I finally got to meet Tony Maximus. I didn't really know what to think of him, other than that he made me somewhat uneasy. But I get that feeling with almost everyone we meet on these jobs who isn't explicitly on our side.
When he heard that Draco Company was outside, Maximus looked somewhat worried and decided we needed to leave out the back, immediately. This struck me as odd, though I've no clue what to make of his apprehension. In any case, Carter had recovered the limo and met us around the back. Darren managed to get there too, but he was in a pretty sorry state. I spent most of the ride to our destination patching him up; the guy was messed up bad enough it looked like he'd been through two accidents.
Maximus had a long conversation with Dex, Seth, and CT on the way to our remote, rural destination. I was too busy working on Darren's injuries to catch most of it, but what I did hear left me apprehensive. Something about exchanging favors for believing in him, which set off lots of alarm bells. I've been doing enough research on the occult to be wary at any of that sort of talk.
We were also attacked en route, apparently by a pair of uratha who didn't want the summit to take place. We managed to kill the both of them, although Sam was very badly injured in the melee. He had his jugular just about torn out...quite frankly I don't know how he survived the night; I've seen men die from lesser injuries. I sewed him up as best I could with what I had, and we had to take him along the rest of the way since resources were too tied up for a medevac.
We arrived at a cabin in the woods without further incident. Inside we met a man named Mark, who seemed very fond of puzzles and mystery. His clothing and manner indicated that he was a man of some arcane power. He drew a magic circle which somehow...shifted us? Of course I don't understand the details of what happened, but after that it was a short car ride to the clearing the summit was taking place at.
It was an impressive meeting, though I didn't understand a word of whatever language the proceedings were taking place in. We seemed very...small...in comparison to the Coven and uratha present. I guess that sort of sums up how I've felt since I joined on and became a part of this whole business, but it was especially clear here.
Just before sunrise, an accord was reached. Before we had a chance to be thankful there would be no war, things unexpectedly went extremely pear-shaped.
Other people who probably know the why's and how's of the situation were there, so I won't go into too much detail. But it will suffice to say that things were going to hell rather quickly--demons, unspeakable horrors beyond comprehension--and I had no clue what to do. Seth, as always, knew much more than he had bothered to tell anyone, but he was still not much help for deciding what to do. Finally it got to the point where we knew to focus our energy on the Thing coming out of the portal.
It seemed as good a time as any to let loose and really fry the sucker. I was as surprised as everyone else that I was able to control my power that well...I'm pretty sure I managed to not crisp any allies, in any case. Finally the portal closed, and I just managed to keep the flames going long enough to incinerate the last bit that fell through. It wore me out...I was completely exhausted. Barely managed to stay conscious long enough to treat Maximus, Sam, and Carter, and then it was suddenly time for lights out.
Notes for the future: make Seth tell, completely and in exquisite detail, the contents of his crazy visions to everyone. Before we leave the warehouse.
